This Dress-Up Game Is the Unsung Star of Showcase Season, and You Can Play It Now

While Infold has long dominated the virtual fashion scene with Infinity Nikki and its predecessors, a formidable new contender emerged during the June 6 Wholesome Direct: Dressmaker. The title functions as a hybrid management simulation—where players must navigate client personalities and specific needs—blended with an expansive dress-up sandbox that provides players with near-limitless creative control over their garment designs.

If the concept feels familiar, you’ve likely encountered its origins. Dressmaker began as an Itch.io prototype in August 2025, birthed from a collaboration between Terra Nil co-creator Jonathan Hau-Yoon and artist/fashion historian Sabrina Becker. The project gained such immediate traction that Hau-Yoon pitched the concept to Free Lives—the unconventional studio behind high-octane hits like Gorn and the irreverent Genital Jousting. Though a stylistic departure for the developer, Free Lives quickly identified the game’s immense potential and fervent community support, ultimately greenlighting a full-scale production.

Those eager for a preview can still access the original prototype on Itch.io. The developer has maintained an extensive changelog detailing the evolution from the early version—which now includes a polished interface and precise body measurement sliders. It is a refreshing shift to see a title so committed to inclusivity in body representation.

As for the gameplay loop, clients arrive with commissions that range from the vague ("something appropriate for a library") to the incredibly specific ("a romantic garden party ensemble with floral accents"). You are then tasked with interpreting these requests; while you must adhere to style metrics to satisfy the client, the aesthetic execution is entirely up to you.

The design process is robust: you begin in a sketchbook to plot colors and silhouettes, followed by a fabric selection phase that is breathtakingly deep. The variety of textiles—ranging from heavy wools and structured damasks to delicate silks and crisp gingham—is astounding. You can even interact with the materials to observe how they drape, cinch, or gather.

Once you’ve selected your materials, you’ll meticulously cut your patterns, assemble the garment, and add the final trimmings on a mannequin. While early prototypes toyed with the idea of "sabotaging" client requests, the final release focuses on reputation-building, which suits me just fine. Given the sheer creative freedom available, I have no desire to be a "dress goblin"—I am far too busy crafting high-fashion masterpieces.

Dressmaker is scheduled to debut on Windows PC this September.
