The Tintin sequel and dropping Gollum: what Peter Jackson revealed in Cannes

At the 79th Cannes Film Festival, acclaimed director Peter Jackson participated in an engaging discussion, offering fresh insights into his upcoming creative endeavors.

Among his current projects, Jackson is actively developing a sequel to the animated feature The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. Fifteen years have passed since the original film, which was directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Jackson.

Steven and I had an agreement that each of us would direct one film, and he has already fulfilled his part. I am currently working on the screenplay—in fact, I was writing it just yesterday while here in Cannes,

— Jackson shared. Based on the beloved Belgian comics by Hergé, The Adventures of Tintin follows the exploits of a young investigative journalist. The 2011 release, The Secret of the Unicorn, was a commercial success, grossing $373 million worldwide.

Jackson also clarified his decision to step back from directing The Hunt for Gollum, the latest installment in the Lord of the Rings universe. That project is being helmed by Andy Serkis, who famously brought the character to life in the original trilogy.

I felt that no one could tell Gollum’s story better than Gollum himself. Andy has an innate grasp of this character’s psychology; he understands him on a level no one else does. The film delves deeply into the internal struggles and the consuming obsession of the character, and I am always happy to provide support,

— the director explained. The new project will see the return of Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen, and Elijah Wood to their iconic roles. The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for an international theatrical release in December 2027.
