The last time Star Wars audiences encountered the formidable Grand Admiral Thrawn—known formally as Mitth’raw’nuruodo—was during the 2023 series Ahsoka. Fans watched as the tactical mastermind escaped his exile on the remote world of Peridea, setting a course for the known galaxy. While the Empire’s most cunning strategist has remained conspicuously silent since then, that anticipated return is finally gaining momentum.
Thrawn has long been a recurring antagonist throughout both the official Star Wars canon and the expanded “Legends” continuity, proving a persistent threat to stalwarts like Hera Syndulla, the Ghost crew, and even Anakin Skywalker. This autumn, he steps back into the spotlight with a fresh, illustrated perspective in the inaugural volume of the Thrawn manga adaptation.
What does the Thrawn manga cover?
The wait for a new look at this iconic villain is nearly over. The North American release of the manga adaptation of Timothy Zahn’s 2017 bestseller, Thrawn, is just around the corner.
Spanning 192 pages and illustrated by the talented Man Tsang, this adaptation offers a deep dive into the formative experiences of a figure destined to irrevocably alter the galaxy’s fate.
It is important to note that this is the first entry in Zahn’s Imperial Trilogy, distinct from the beloved “Thrawn Trilogy” he penned in the early 90s. This specific narrative arc documents the Chiss warrior’s humble beginnings as an exile who eventually earns the trust of Emperor Palpatine, meticulously climbing the imperial ranks to become the galaxy’s most feared tactician.
This is not the character’s first foray into print adaptation; Marvel Comics previously serialized the novel in 2018. Similar to that project, the new manga chronicles Thrawn’s steady ascent, bridging the timeline between Revenge of the Sith and his introduction in Star Wars: Rebels.
In a recent interview, artist Man Tsang discussed the unique challenges of translating a cerebral novel into a visual manga format.
“Action comics usually lean on simple expressions—pure rage or joy,” Tsang noted. “But Thrawn is essentially a political schemer. Once I began reading the source material, I realized that capturing that complexity in a manga format would be an incredibly nuanced challenge.”
Will the series encompass the full trilogy?
While official details remain sparse, it is widely expected that this current run will focus exclusively on the first novel. Whether the project will continue into adaptations of the subsequent books, Thrawn: Alliances and Thrawn: Treason, remains an open question for future announcements.
When can I read it?
Following its initial debut in the United Kingdom on June 9, Thrawn Vol. 1 will arrive in the United States and Canada on September 29.
