The Century’s Most Beloved TMNT Saga Returns with a Brand New Look

In October 2020, IDW Comics unveiled a radical reimagining of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mythos. Six years later, that celebrated limited series has been transformed into a gritty noir novel courtesy of Abrams Books. Polygon is thrilled to share an exclusive first look.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin chronicles the odyssey of the final surviving Turtle. Haunted by the loss of his family, he wages a solitary war for vengeance against the grandson of Shredder, who now commands an iron-fisted empire within a dystopian, futuristic New York City. The narrative foundations were laid in the late 1980s by series creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, with Eastman rediscovering their original vision decades later.

Collaborating with long-time IDW writer Tom Waltz, Eastman expanded the concept into a five-part powerhouse series featuring the atmospheric art of the Escorza Brothers and veteran artist Ben Bishop. Following the massive success of the graphic novels, franchise regular Erik Burnham has now adapted the story into a prose novel, complemented by fresh illustrations from the Escorza Brothers.
