The Burnout revival didn’t happen: ‘Mixed’ reviews for Wreckreation on Steam and serious problems
The creators of the Burnout series sought to revive the thrill of chaotic crashes with their new title Wreckreation, but the release fell short. The Three Fields Entertainment project — envisioned as a spiritual successor to Burnout blended with Trackmania — met with a restrained reception.
A game that banked on complete freedom and the ability to craft tracks via LiveMix earned an average press score around 70% — decent, but not blockbuster territory. Reviewers commended the concept and the arcade racing atmosphere, yet flagged numerous technical issues and unfinished elements that quickly undermined the game’s promise.
Reporters praised the spectacle of collisions and the inventiveness in track creation, but criticized poor optimization, an empty open world, odd vehicle physics, and a lackluster campaign.
Players proved even less forgiving. On Steam the title carries a “Mixed” rating, with only about 47% positive reviews after more than 100 opinions. Burnout fans have labeled Wreckreation an incomplete experiment: frequent FPS drops, freezes, control bugs, and illogical time limits make the experience frustrating.
The central grievance is terrible optimization. Cars behave unpredictably, drifting is inconsistent, and there’s no option to return to the previous checkpoint. Many see potential in the game, but without significant updates it risks remaining a hollow echo of Burnout.
