Arc System Works dropped an electrifying new trailer for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls on May 2, officially welcoming Hulk and Black Panther to the roster as part of the “Fighting Avengers” squad. While the inclusion of these iconic heavy hitters is hardly a surprise, the studio threw a curveball with the reveal of the Black Panther: it is Shuri donning the mantle, rather than T’Challa.
Historically, titles such as Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Marvel’s Avengers, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance have leaned exclusively on T’Challa as the definitive Black Panther. However, given that the title is a lineage passed down through generations, the mantle has been held by various figures across comic book history and cinematic adaptations. Notably, the upcoming Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is set to showcase Azzuri—the grandfather of T’Challa and Shuri—stepping into the role.
Following the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, Disney made the creative decision to cement Shuri as the Black Panther within the Marvel Cinematic Universe rather than recasting T’Challa. This trajectory mirrors comic storylines where Shuri first assumed the role in 2009, among other instances. Consequently, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls marks a significant milestone as the first major console fighter to feature Shuri as the primary incarnation of the character.
According to a recent PlayStation Blog post, Arc System Works notes that within the game’s narrative, Shuri is the newly crowned ruler of Wakanda. Mechanically, the developers have crafted her playstyle to be exceptionally “sleek” and “acrobatic,” emphasizing fluid movement and high-pressure, mid-range combat tactics.
This creative choice to feature Shuri is a brilliant touch—not only does it lean into effective MCU synergy, but it also brings vital gender diversity to a roster that could otherwise skew heavily toward male archetypes. As someone who naturally gravitates toward high-mobility fighters, I am eager to incorporate her into my starting lineup. Furthermore, the trailer suggests that Hulk’s gameplay will be equally satisfying for players who prefer a more destructive, brawler-centric style.
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is slated for release on PC and PS5 on August 6. Fans looking for an early preview can get hands-on experience with Black Panther when the character arrives in the demo build at Combo Breaker 2026 and Hong Kong Comic Con 2026 later this May.
