That’s Different: ARC Raiders Creator Comments on AI-Use Warning That Appeared on Steam Page

A variety of technologies were employed in the creation of the extraction shooter.

Embark Studios recently launched the extraction shooter ARC Raiders. Players browsing the game’s Steam page spotted a notice stating that AI was used in development:

During development we occasionally employ procedural systems and AI-driven tools to generate content. In every case, the final product reflects the creative intent and expressive vision of our development team.

In an interview with PCGamesN, design director Virgil Watkins said they do not use generative AI and that the game contains no generative content:

ARC Raiders does not use generative AI. We employ machine learning — specifically reinforcement learning — to drive the motions of our large multi‑legged drones, but there is no generative content in the game.

ARC Raiders also uses text‑to‑speech technology to generate new voice lines:

It’s the same system we used in The Finals: the same text‑voicing model. We sign contracts with voice actors that permit the use of AI for this purpose, which enables features like our ping system to announce every item name, location name, and compass direction. That way we can add voiced lines for new in‑game items without recording a human performer each time.
