The combination of game systems opened up a new path for completing one of the quests.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered releases on the Nintendo Switch 2 console on August 11. The developers are promoting the release and giving interviews.

During a recent interview with Nintendo Life, Bethesda junior art director Dan Lee shared a story from the development of the original game. In those years, he worked as a tester handling playtests.

Among other things, he studied NPC (non-player character) AI behavior mechanics. They experience hunger and look for food on their own when the need arises. At that point, Dan Lee decided to use this feature against one of the NPCs.

The quest required him to sneak onto a ship to eliminate the captain. According to the story, the captain’s assistant and another enemy were supposed to emerge from an ambush. However, instead of a direct confrontation, Dan acted cleverly, turning hunger into a trap for the captain:

And I thought, “Is there a way to abuse this [use the hunger mechanic]?” Hearing about the hunger mechanic, I snuck through the ship to the captain’s cabin, took all the food, put a poisoned apple in his pocket, and left. I waited, and suddenly a notification popped up: “Quest Completed” — he is dead.

After that, Dan Lee says, he ran up to developer Emil Pagliarulo and said, “I can’t believe you guys accounted for this. That’s awesome!” And Emil replied that he “didn’t account for it” — the game systems simply worked.

Dan shared that this quest remains in his memory for more than 20 years: “All [game systems] interact with each other. And finding such an unexpected but fascinating interaction mechanic is truly engaging.”
