Take-Two CEO weighs in on whether AI can create a game on par with Grand Theft Auto
Strauss Zelnick did not categorically rule out the use of AI in development.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick told CNBC his views on how artificial intelligence could affect the development of Grand Theft Auto 7.
Zelnick stopped short of dismissing AI entirely, but he voiced skepticism about its real-world usefulness in game development and production more broadly. He placed particular emphasis on safeguarding the company’s intellectual property.
We must protect our intellectual property, but it’s even more important to respect the rights of others. If you create intellectual property with AI, it is not eligible for protection.
Speaking specifically about Grand Theft Auto, the Take-Two chief emphasized that even without any AI restrictions, artificial intelligence cannot reproduce what Rockstar’s team has achieved.
Even if there were no limits on AI, could we press a button tomorrow and produce an equivalent Grand Theft Auto marketing plan? The answer is no. First, it isn’t possible yet, and second, I believe the result would be subpar.
Zelnick explained that AI “looks backward”: it relies on existing data and may seem inventive because of predictive modeling, but it is weak in creative domains that don’t arise from analyzing past examples.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on May 26, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
