The CEO of Sweet Baby Inc. asserted that the company carried out its responsibilities to the fullest and “broke no rules.” She argued that those who oppose agenda-driven content in games are, in effect, opposing progress and innovation.
Earlier, the studio was criticized for imposing narratives and DEI initiatives (diversity, equity, and inclusion), which detractors say contributed to the failure of some projects.
Although the buzz around Sweet Baby has faded and the industry has moved away from heavy-handed DEI efforts, company head Kim Belair recently said on a podcast that attacks on such agendas hinder the progressive development and growth of games. The studio contributed narrative work to major titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Alan Wake 2.
Belair emphasized that creative decisions are a battleground with both victories and setbacks, and that Sweet Baby performed its work to the highest standard. She did note, however, that the company sometimes crossed a fine line between advising and direct interference.
Fans remain divided: many blamed the studio for weakening storylines through imposed DEI measures, and Spider-Man 2 also received criticism.
