Sony Adapts Pixel Adventure Game The Drifter Into Film

Sony Pictures and Story Kitchen have acquired the rights to produce a live-action feature film adaptation of The Drifter, a pixel-art point-and-click adventure game by Australian studio Powerhoof, according to Deadline.

The project is being developed in partnership with Story Kitchen, which currently has about two dozen video game adaptations in development.

The story follows Mick Carter, who returns to his hometown for a funeral and accidentally witnesses a murder. Soon after, unknown soldiers kill him as well, but moments before dying, the protagonist unexpectedly travels back in time. Trapped in a time loop, Mick tries to escape from his killers and the police, make sense of what is happening, and uncover the conspiracy behind it all.

Dmitri M. Johnson and Michael Lawrence Goldberg from Story Kitchen will serve as producers for the adaptation. Timothy I. Stevenson and Elena Sandoval have been named executive producers. A writer, director, and cast have not been chosen yet, and the release date remains unknown.

This is far from Story Kitchen’s first video game adaptation. The company worked on Sonic the Hedgehog and the animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, while its upcoming projects include live-action Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner and Life is Strange.

Story Kitchen currently has roughly two dozen projects based on gaming franchises in development, including Sifu, Split Fiction, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Vampire Survivors, and Persona. Because of this, production on The Drifter adaptation may not begin for quite some time.
