World of Warcraft Forever Officially Breaks Records for the 22-Year-Old MMO

Blizzard Entertainment released World of Warcraft Forever on Nov. 4, and the early response appears to have exceeded expectations. The launch was notably smoother than some past Blizzard releases and set new records—an impressive result for a game built on an MMO that is nearly 22 years old.

Which World of Warcraft records did Forever set?

In posts on Bluesky and X, Blizzard said World of Warcraft Forever reached the highest peak concurrent player count of any World of Warcraft launch. It also drew more returning players than any previous launch in the franchise. The numbers suggest the updated MMO appealed both to newcomers and to players who had been away for years.

“WoW: Forever has achieved: The biggest launch in WoW history by peak concurrent players; the highest number of returning players in WoW history. This is all because of you, the players. From all of us, THANK YOU!”

World of Warcraft Forever blends elements of the MMO’s classic and modern versions. It pairs updated visuals and features such as controller support with a return to the original game’s 2004 content, expanding from that foundation.

That combination seems to have struck a chord. Blizzard says Forever attracted more players at launch—and brought back more former players—than either World of Warcraft Classic or a new expansion. The company no longer publishes subscriber totals, however, so the exact number of people who joined through Forever may remain unknown.

World of Warcraft Forever is available for Windows PC through the standard World of Warcraft subscription. Blizzard intends to develop new content for the game for as long as players remain interested. Associate production director Clayton Stone told Bloomberg: “We want to go on this journey as long as players want to go with us. There are so many theories about unfinished World of Warcraft—unfinished raids, unfinished zones, unfinished dungeons, stories and adventures for players to go on.”
