Surprise Yoshi Trailer Drops on Mario Day

While the calendar marks today as Mario Day, the spotlight has undeniably shifted toward his prehistoric companion. Following the revelation that Donald Glover will voice the iconic dinosaur in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo has doubled down on the momentum by unveiling a fresh trailer and a release date for Yoshi’s next interactive outing.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a whimsical 2D platformer that tasks the titular hero with populating the pages of Mr. E, a sentient, living encyclopedia. Yoshi’s method of scientific inquiry remains as unorthodox as ever: he must swallow various creatures to catalog their traits. The “Creature Discovery!” teaser demonstrates this sensory research in action, with on-screen text describing a creature’s flavor profile as “bitter and soap-like” after Yoshi’s signature gulp.

The gameplay loop involves more than just snacking; players are also responsible for naming the newly discovered species. Given the creative—and often irreverent—tendencies of the gaming community, Nintendo’s profanity filters will likely be under heavy strain. While players might try to bypass the censors, the trailer offers a more wholesome alternative: Yoshi asks Mr. E for a suggestion, resulting in the charmingly appropriate name “Glubbit.”

The footage wraps up with a cameo from Bowser Jr., who is set to be voiced by Benny Safdie in next month’s theatrical release. Nintendo confirmed that Yoshi and the Mysterious Book will launch on May 21, securing its spot as a primary highlight for the Nintendo Switch 2 late-spring lineup.

This flurry of Yoshi news follows the recent debut of a trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park. That enhanced update is scheduled to arrive on March 26.

As for the origins of Mario Day, the tradition persists not because of any specific lore, but because the shorthand date “MAR10” perfectly mimics the mustachioed hero’s name. The 2026 iteration of the holiday brought with it several additions to the Nintendo Classics library and a variety of retail discounts. Furthermore, a new Lego Luigi set was announced, ensuring that even on Mario’s self-titled holiday, the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom gets a share of the glory.
