Superman Spin-Off About Jimmy Olsen Titled The People vs. Gorilla Grodd
HBO Max has greenlit an eight-episode order for “The People v. Gorilla Grodd,” a comedy mockumentary exploring the Metropolis legal system. The project is part of the rebooted DC Universe and continues the story of Jimmy Olsen from James Gunn’s “Superman.”
Framed as a true-crime documentary, the series follows Jimmy as he investigates one of the most high-profile trials in Metropolis. He sets out to discover whether Gorilla Grodd is genuinely guilty of murdering his own father.
Skyler Gisondo reprises his role as Olsen, while Jimmy Tatro portrays Grodd. Several familiar Daily Planet staff members will also appear, including Steve Lombard played by Beck Bennett, Cat Grant played by Mikaela Hoover, and Perry White played by Wendell Pierce.
According to James Gunn and Peter Safran, the spin-off grew directly from the Daily Planet cast and their on-screen chemistry in “Superman”:
“Skyler’s performance and the wonderful chemistry among the Daily Planet staff showed us that this world is worth exploring.”

“American Vandal” creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault serve as showrunners, with Yacenda directing all eight episodes. The creators intend to present the show as an authentic documentary produced by the Daily Planet for the citizens of Metropolis:
“We hope fans of comic books, comedy, and true crime will enjoy it. We can’t speak for audiences in our world just yet, but we already know that in Metropolis the show became a massive hit. They love it over there.”
Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios are handling production. Filming and premiere dates have not yet been announced.
