Comic book writer Tom King praised Milly Alcock for her portrayal of Kara Zor-El in “Supergirl,” noting that the original “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic series also overcame a slow start. King highlighted Alcock’s performance and mentioned that he was deeply moved when the filmmakers named a planet after his daughter.

“It was a joy to watch Milly Alcock’s performance—the way she embodied the character’s rebellious side and how brilliantly she brought her to life on screen.”

Audiences and critics gave “Supergirl” a more mixed reception. The film holds a 52% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 73% score from audiences. Worldwide box office earnings totaled around $125 million against an estimated $170 million production budget.

According to King, the source comic followed a similar path. The initial issues of “Woman of Tomorrow” sold poorly, only gaining broad recognition after staff at comic book shops and early readers championed the run.

“That book started out very modestly, and few people believed in it. Even after release, it sold poorly at first. It was supported by wonderful comic shop fans: they personally recommended it to visitors, talked about it, and posted online. Thanks to that wave of support, the book gained attention.”

After finishing its theatrical run, “Supergirl” picked up momentum on home platforms. The movie arrived for digital purchase and rental on July 28 and led the Fandango at Home chart in its first week.

Alcock will continue playing Kara Zor-El in future DC Studios releases. The character is set to appear in James Gunn’s “Man of Tomorrow,” scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. Executive producer Lars Winther also confirmed that Supergirl will feature in an additional, unannounced project from the studio.
