It is difficult to forget the era when Family Guy faced cancellation in 2000, only to stage a miraculous comeback and evolve into a global comedic juggernaut. Now, twenty-five years into its storied run, Fox is doubling down on the franchise by greenlighting a dedicated spinoff centered on its most iconic character: the malevolent, time-traveling infant, Stewie Griffin.

According to a report by Deadline, Fox has already committed to a two-season order for the new series, simply titled Stewie. While a precise launch date has not been set, the show is slated for a premiere during the 2027-2028 television season. International audiences can expect to stream the episodes on Hulu and Disney Plus shortly after their broadcast debut.

Seth MacFarlane, the voice behind the articulate toddler, will reprise his role and serve as an executive producer. He is joined by industry veterans Kara Vallow and Kirker Butler, the latter of whom will take the reins as the spinoff’s showrunner.

Stewie will share the spotlight with Fox’s established animation block, which includes The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, and American Dad. The premise takes the character out of the Griffin household and into the mundane rigors of preschool—though with a high-concept twist. After being expelled from his former school, Stewie finds himself enrolled in a lackluster institution alongside a depressed 75-year-old class turtle. To break the monotony, he utilizes his vast array of futuristic gadgetry to lead his classmates on surreal excursions across time and space.

Fans of the flagship series need not worry about continuity; the spinoff exists in its own narrative space and will not interfere with the ongoing plot of Family Guy, though viewers can expect occasional Easter eggs. Early reports suggest a more concentrated format, with seasons consisting of slightly fewer than 15 episodes.

This marks the franchise’s second major foray into spinoff territory, following The Cleveland Show, which enjoyed a four-season run beginning in 2009. Whether Stewie’s solo venture can achieve the same level of longevity as the “mothership” show remains to be seen, but the character’s enduring popularity suggests a promising future.
