Steam Game Malware Scandal Reaches FBI as Investigation Begins

Some game developers are shipping titles with more than just entertainment under the hood.

The FBI recently issued a public notice seeking potential victims who may have installed malware-infested games via the Steam platform.

Investigators believe that cybercriminals targeted Steam users primarily between May 2024 and January 2026. Malicious code was embedded directly into games, designed to harvest sensitive personal data and drain cryptocurrency wallets.

The investigation is currently ongoing, and the Bureau is encouraging anyone affected to come forward and share their information.
