Following a turbulent launch on Monday, May 4, that saw initial inventory vanish in mere minutes due to widespread checkout technicalities, Valve is refining its approach to selling the Steam Controller. The company acknowledges the frustration caused by these transaction errors and is implementing a reservation system to ensure a more orderly rollout for the upcoming batch.
According to an official update from Valve, reservations will officially open tomorrow, May 8, at 10 am PT / 1 pm ET. This system secures your spot in line, limited to one unit per customer. Once a reservation is secured, you will receive an email notification granting you a 72-hour window to complete the transaction; failure to do so within that timeframe will result in the forfeiture of your spot. Please note that individuals who successfully purchased a controller during the initial, chaotic launch are ineligible to participate in this second reservation wave.
To qualify for a reservation, users must meet the following criteria:
- Your Steam account must be in good standing.
- You must have a history of purchases on Steam prior to April 27, 2026.
Valve noted that fulfillment timelines will vary by region, stating, “We will start fulfilling reservations next week in the US and Canada, followed by the UK, EU, and Australia in the subsequent weeks.”
Retailing at $99, the Steam Controller serves as a precursor to the Steam Machine console revealed last November. While designed as a companion for that upcoming hardware—which has faced delays due to global RAM shortages—the controller functions as a premium, standalone PC gamepad. Given the strong critical reception driving demand, hopefully, this new reservation structure provides a far more seamless experience for prospective buyers.
