Reports Detail Why Rockstar Chose Netflix to Debut GTA VI
After the premiere on Netflix, the materials will also appear on another platform.
Gamers have long complained that the creators of Grand Theft Auto VI are not publishing new footage. Rockstar Games responded by announcing an expanded showcase of the game, but with a catch: the premiere will take place on the Netflix service. This decision very much surprised video game fans.
Netflix published an official statement on its website regarding the collaboration with Rockstar Games. This partnership is called unprecedented and marks an important date for the service itself:
The new installment in the iconic series is coming 13 years after the release of GTA V, the same year Netflix began actively developing its original content production. This collaboration marks a new generation of storytelling and content on Netflix.
Brandon Riegg, vice president of nonfiction series, commented on this collaboration:
Grand Theft Auto announcements are cultural events in their own right. The anticipation and fan interest surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI are unprecedented, and we are proud that Rockstar Games chose us to be the first to show the next chapter of the GTA story specifically to Netflix subscribers. This reflects our goal of making Netflix a place where the most ambitious stories from any medium find the widest possible audience.

Netflix is popular, and such a launch of the GTA VI showcase could attract an additional audience, so the partnership looks logical. However, there is another version from insider Tom Henderson regarding a large payment from Netflix:
GTA VI revenue from this Netflix deal likely already exceeded the equivalent of selling one million copies. I doubt we will ever know the exact figures, but it was a significant sum that prompted Take-Two to make the deal.
The premiere of the expanded Grand Theft Auto VI showcase on Netflix is expected at the end of August. Six hours later, the developers are scheduled to publish the presented materials on YouTube as well.
The release of GTA VI is scheduled for November 19 of this year exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. The release date or release window for the PC version of the game has not been specified yet.
