Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord hits the sweet spot for fans craving a high-stakes, pulpy sci-fi noir. It masterfully weaves the atmospheric tension of a classic gangster epic into the sprawling Star Wars universe, resulting in a project that feels both fresh and electrifying. While the series embraces a decidedly dark, gritty aesthetic, it doesn’t shy away from moments of dark whimsy—a balance perfectly captured by the introduction of a mischievous, cackling droid.
The Star Wars galaxy is no stranger to iconic droid sidekicks, from the rebellious spirit of Chopper in Rebels to the legendary rapport of R2-D2 and C-3PO. Yet, Spybot feels cut from a different cloth. Brought to life by the voice work of David W. Collins, this sleek, obsidian-colored machine exudes a sadistic glee that sets it apart from typical subservient droids. It actively delights in carnage, gloating with every strike. Furthermore, the way the Sith Lord handles his metallic protégé—often stroking it with an air of cold affection—evokes memories of Ernst Stavro Blofeld and his iconic white Persian cat, cementing Maul’s status as a quintessential underworld kingpin.

“It was truly a collaborative effort, and David Collins elevated the character beyond our expectations,” explains Matt Michnovetz, who also helms the series as head writer. “We wanted Maul to have an unsettling yet charismatic droid—a fusion of spider-like agility and predatory feline nature. It was his equivalent of a loyal, villainous pet.”
“The initial script simply called for Maul to pet Spybot,” Rau notes. “When we saw that on the page, we realized we had to lean into that dynamic. We kept pushing ourselves to add more details to that interaction.”

Beyond the standout debut in the premiere—which also introduced the mysterious Master Eeko-Dio Daki and a formidable squad of Mandalorian warriors—Spybot serves as the series’ most delightful wildcard. Like the most enduring droids in the franchise, we are eager to see how its personality evolves throughout the rest of the first season.
The first two episodes of Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord are currently streaming on Disney Plus, with new installments debuting every Monday through May 4.
