The controversial ending of the eleventh season was part of a grand plan by The X-Files creator.

The X-Files creator Chris Carter stated that he still wants to continue and conclude the story of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. According to him, the final seasons left several plotlines that were supposed to be developed during the show’s next return.

The ending of the eleventh season, in which Scully tells Mulder about her pregnancy, sparked a particularly high amount of debate. Carter acknowledges that viewers were left unhappy, but asserts that the story was not supposed to end there:

“I was told that I didn’t give the audience what they wanted. I think I didn’t give them what they expected. But more was still to come. Four episodes from the last two revivals were part of a grand plan that I hope to reveal to The X-Files fans if we get the opportunity to return to the series again.”

Carter does not yet know what format he will use to finish the story, whether as another season or a feature film. He first intends to wait for the new version of The X-Files from Sinners director Ryan Coogler and does not want to compete with the project:

“I don’t want to do anything that could compete with it or get in its way. I want to continue and finish the storyline I conceived. At the same time, I look forward to Coogler’s version. My name is listed as an executive producer, but I haven’t done a single thing for the project.”

Carter did not even read Coogler’s script because he wants to experience the new take on The X-Files at the same time as everyone else. The possibility of the two versions coexisting, according to him, will depend on how the new series turns out.

Coogler has already filmed a pilot episode for Hulu. The lead roles went to Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, who will play new characters rather than younger versions of Scully and Mulder. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
