The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake has become the highest-rated game in Metacritic history based on user reviews, earning a score of 9.6 out of 10.

In the three days since its release, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 has received 5,368 user ratings. Metacritic reports that more than 5,200 are positive, or 96% of the total. Another 76 ratings are mixed (1%), while 148 are negative (3%). The site gave the remake its “Universal Acclaim” rating.

The new version also has an impressive critic score of 96, placing it among the year’s highest-rated releases. Nintendo completely revamped the graphics of the original Nintendo 64 adventure while keeping its dungeon layouts and story. Changes include improved character controls, a dedicated jump button, character voice acting, and other small improvements intended to modernize the gameplay.

The 1998 original Ocarina of Time still holds Metacritic’s record for the highest-rated game by critics, with an average score of 99 out of 100 based on 22 reviews. The game helped establish many conventions of 3D adventures, including target-locking in combat and camera control. The Legend of Zelda franchise, created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, launched in 1986 and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
