Square Enix Plans to Focus on New Games but Doesn’t Rule Out Classic Final Fantasy Remakes

Square Enix plans to prioritize investment in new games over remakes, though it is not ruling out revisiting classics.

Yoshinori Kitase, a Square Enix executive director and the game director of the original Final Fantasy VII, discussed the company’s plans in an interview with IGN.

Kitase said decisions about remakes depend heavily on the circumstances. The Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, for example, gave the team a chance to update a familiar story and add elements that were not in the original. Developers who worked on the first game and felt a special attachment to it also worked on the project.

I think that, generally, we’re more likely to invest in new projects and games. But in the case of the Final Fantasy VII remake, I and other creators of the original game, which we felt very strongly about, worked on it. We wanted to create something new based on the old game so that new users could discover its strengths and love it just as those who played the original did.
Yoshinori Kitase, Square Enix.

Kitase added that similar circumstances could arise in the future, leaving the door open for Square Enix to revisit older projects. For now, the company appears set to focus primarily on creating entirely new games.

Industry insiders have reported that a rumored Final Fantasy IX remake was at a relatively advanced stage of development before production was suspended. In March 2026, reports said the game was still “on hold.” Square Enix has not commented on the rumors.

Kitase also discussed the possibility of films and series based on the company’s games. In his view, such adaptations could introduce Final Fantasy stories to a wider audience, including people who do not play video games.

Given that we created a remake of Final Fantasy VII that explores the game’s world in much greater depth than the original, it would be great to see films or series inspired by Final Fantasy stories in the future. I don’t see any reason why that wouldn’t be possible.
Yoshinori Kitase, Square Enix.
