Monolith Soft, the studio known for the Xenoblade Chronicles series, has confirmed that it helped Nintendo develop the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The team worked on game design, programming, and graphics.

Nintendo and Monolith Soft have worked together for many years. In 2024, Nintendo bought the remaining shares in Monolith Soft, becoming the studio’s sole owner. The Japanese company previously held 96% of its shares.

Monolith Soft has long partnered with Nintendo on Zelda games. The studio also helped develop The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom.

The teams’ working relationship has changed over time. On Skyward Sword, Monolith Soft primarily created game assets to Nintendo’s specifications. During the development of Breath of the Wild, the studios collaborated much more often on ideas and their implementation.

Zelda series general manager Daiki Iwamoto previously called Monolith Soft a strong partner and expressed a desire to give it a more significant role in future games in the franchise. He said the teams’ experience working together and the potential of the entire Monolith Soft team could be used to create an entirely new game in the series.

Monolith Soft director and animator Yasuhiro Fujita has also noted that the studio is gradually gaining more independence in joint projects.

Beyond Zelda, Monolith Soft has helped Nintendo with other well-known franchises. Last year, the studio confirmed that it helped create the open world for Mario Kart World, a Nintendo Switch 2 launch game. Monolith Soft has also served as a support team on games in the Animal Crossing, Splatoon, and Pikmin series.
