TriStar Pictures, a division of Sony, has secured the rights to adapt “Cartoon Cat“—the viral internet urban legend created by Canadian artist Trevor Henderson (“Tara”).
Emerging online in 2018, the “Cat” is envisioned as an ancient entity that manifests in the form of a 1930s-era cartoon character. Its signature traits include a menacing, toothy grin and a hunting ground located within a shopping mall, where the creature stalks and consumes its prey under the cover of darkness.
The film will be produced by Roy Lee (“Barbarian”). Following the widespread success of “The Backrooms,” Hollywood’s appetite for digital folklore continues to grow. This past summer, Warner Bros. acquired the rights to another of Henderson’s iconic creations, “Siren Head.” Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment is currently developing an adaptation of the “Mandela Catalogue” creepypasta.
