Seth Green Discusses Canceled Buffy the Vampire Slayer Hulu Sequel

Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer received disappointing news in March when Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed the cancellation of a planned revival series. The Hulu project, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, was set to star Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a new slayer alongside Gellar in a supporting role. Showrunner Chloé Zhao (Hamnet, Nomadland, The Eternals) had already directed a pilot episode before the streamer opted to discard the project entirely rather than order rewrites or reshoots. Five months later, the exact circumstances behind the decision remain unknown.

Seth Green, who portrayed the werewolf Oz on the original series, shared his thoughts on the situation during an interview with Polygon. While discussing an upcoming Robot Chicken special produced with co-creator Matthew Senreich for the 25th anniversary of Adult Swim, Green reflected on the lost pilot.

“I know they shot a pilot,” Green said. “I know that Sarah [Michelle Gellar] was excited about it, which tells me that there’s a lot of good stuff going on in it. And I was definitely disappointed to hear that it was being abandoned, rather than made perfect for the fans.”

Why Buffy remains relevant

Green highlighted the enduring appeal of the franchise more than two decades after the original series concluded in 2003, viewing the universe as ideal for bringing multiple generations of viewers together.

“There remains an enormous opportunity for both a new generation and legacy parents to enjoy these stories together,” Green said. “That’s the biggest thing I saw from Buffy. As soon as it hit DVD, parents were sharing it with their kids.”

The series continues to resonate with younger audiences because it framed monsters and vampires as metaphors for dating, high school hardships, and the broader challenges of adolescence.

“This show is such a good shepherd through that time,” Green said. “I think there are still plenty of stories to tell. I was definitely disappointed to hear they weren’t going to go forward with it.”
