Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have set a release date for the sequel to the blockbuster A Minecraft Movie: A Minecraft Movie 2 is scheduled to open on June 23, 2027. The follow-up reunites much of the creative team responsible for the original film.

Jared Hess returns to direct and co-develop the screenplay alongside returning writer Chris Galletta, according to Deadline. Producers from Legendary — Mary Parent and Cale Boyter — are on board again, joined by Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, and Jason Momoa, who also reprises a producing role after appearing as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison in the first movie.

There’s no official casting news yet for the sequel. The first film’s ensemble included Jack Black (as Steve), Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. That story followed four misfits who are pulled into the Minecraft universe and must rely on Steve — a skilled crafter — to find their way back to the real world.

A Minecraft Movie opened in the U.S. on April 4, 2025, topping the box office with a domestic opening weekend of roughly $163 million. Its total U.S. gross reached about $424 million, making it the highest-earning domestic release of 2025. Globally, the film approached the billion-dollar mark, with a reported worldwide total near $957.8 million as of June 30, 2025.

Critical response was mixed: the film holds a 48% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences rated it much more favorably at 86%. The movie also spawned viral attention on platforms like TikTok — notably the “Chicken Jockey” meme — which likely boosted theatrical interest.

Video game adaptations continue to find commercial success: sequels and follow-ups for other gaming-based films are in the works as well, including projects tied to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Mortal Kombat II.
