Sega Reveals Early Prototype of Darker Sonic Frontiers Without Floating Platforms

The original vision differs from what players received at launch.

SEGA participated in the Tokyo Game Show event, during which the developers showcased a short gameplay clip from an early prototype of Sonic Frontiers.

During the gameplay presentations of Sonic Frontiers, many players had questions because colorful structures and objects appeared in midair during gameplay: rings, walls, platforms, and rails that Sonic could use.

However, everything is different in the shown prototype of Sonic Frontiers. At an early stage of development, the game had a different, darker tone. There were no flying platforms back then; Sonic could use an elevator to climb towers and look around, and at that moment neither platforms nor other floating objects are visible in the frame.

Instead, a huge enemy can be seen in the distance. The blue hedgehog could run up to it and then climb on top to retrieve an emerald.

The moment featuring the prototype during the broadcast “飯塚Pがディレクター陣とゲームを語り尽くす!【ソニックTGS記念特番】” begins at the 54:30 mark.

Ultimately, many players still liked Sonic Frontiers. On Steam, the project has “very positive” reviews, with an 89% rating after more than 28,000 user reviews.
