The 79th Cannes Film Festival featured the premiere of “Fjord,” the latest cinematic work from acclaimed Romanian director Cristian Mungiu.
Following the screening, the audience honored the film with a 12-minute standing ovation—the longest reception for any entry in the main competition thus far. The film stars Academy Award nominees Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve in the lead roles.
The narrative follows a deeply religious couple who relocate from Romania to Norway with their five children. Their lives are upended when teachers at their daughter’s school discover bruises, triggering an official investigation that eventually leads to the children being removed from their parents’ custody.
“It was essential for me to highlight a critical issue in contemporary global society: the clashing of traditional and progressive values, which only serves to drive people further apart. If we examine our current reality, we see a fractured world where there is little effort to understand opposing perspectives. In my view, the priority must be to listen to others rather than remaining blinded by our own sense of righteousness,”
— Mungiu remarked during the press conference. He added that he conducted extensive research, including interviews with those who have navigated similar experiences and consultations with law enforcement, to ensure a multifaceted portrayal of the story.
Reinsve noted that her character, Lisbet, stands apart from her previous roles:
“It was daunting to portray someone who has committed wrong, even cruel acts, without being aware of the harm they are causing. I cannot fully relate to Lisbet, but I believe this is vital; the reality of domestic abuse often remains invisible to those who perpetrate it,”
— the actress reflected. The film will be released in Russian theaters by the distribution company Russian Report.
