Ready Player One screenwriter working on sequel

Zak Penn, the screenwriter behind the blockbuster hit Ready Player One—originally directed by Steven Spielberg—has confirmed that he is currently developing the follow-up film.

While an official release date has yet to be finalized, the project will be adapted from Ernest Cline’s novel, Ready Player Two. Rumblings of the sequel first surfaced in 2020, with early projections suggesting a potential 2028 premiere.

Warner Bros. has not yet issued a statement regarding the news, and it remains unclear whether Steven Spielberg will return to the director’s chair.

Ready Player One centered on the OASIS, a sprawling virtual reality universe steeped in 1980s pop culture, and ultimately grossed $583 million worldwide. In the sequel, protagonist Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) and his allies uncover a revolutionary new technology known as ONI, only to discover the perilous consequences it poses to the human brain.
