Rumor: Sony May Reconsider Disc Drive Phase-Out Plan

This summer, Sony announced plans to stop producing physical discs for PlayStation games. The initial announcement indicated that the new policy would take effect in January 2028, but the company may revise its plans.

The announcement sparked a wave of public outrage online. Players flooded PlayStation social media posts and trailers with calls to bring back discs, while some declared a total boycott this month by refusing to play on the console, stopping the use of Sony services, and canceling subscriptions. Sony might adjust its policy regarding the implementation timeline, but the reason for such a decision, if truly made, is not player reaction.

The Eurogamer Nitro 1×01 podcast from Eurogamer Spain noted that a feeling is growing that the December 31, 2027 deadline could be pushed back by a year or two, potentially due to Xbox moves. Sony leadership reportedly realized they left an opening for other market participants to change their strategy.
