Filmmaker Jason Reitman, acclaimed for his work on Ghostbusters: Afterlife, is reportedly spearheading a live-action adaptation of the iconic Japanese manga Astro Boy. This update comes courtesy of the industry outlet The InSneider.
The original source material, which debuted in 1952, was penned by the legendary Osamu Tezuka and drew significant inspiration from the classic tale of Pinocchio. The story unfolds in a futuristic society where androids and humans coexist. At its heart is Atom (widely known as Astro Boy), a high-tech robot crafted by the grieving Dr. Tenma to replace his late son. After a stint in a circus, Atom begins to cultivate human emotions and eventually becomes a hero dedicated to protecting humanity from various threats.
The franchise has previously seen several iterations, including the classic anime series and a 2009 Hollywood animated feature. Reitman is collaborating on this new vision with his frequent creative partner, screenwriter Gil Kenan (pictured left), with Sony Pictures overseeing the production process.
Reitman’s most recent directorial outing, Saturday Night, premiered in 2024 and garnered a polarized response from the critics.
