Days of Thunder sequel in development
The sequel to the high-octane racing drama “Days of Thunder” has moved into active development. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project will be helmed by director Jonathan Levine, best known for his work on “Warm Bodies.”
Tom Cruise is set to reprise his lead role and will also serve as a producer on the film. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the story is expected to revisit the career of Cole Trickle, the ambitious racer Cruise famously portrayed in the 1990 original.
Paramount Pictures is overseeing the production, with the screenplay currently being penned by Ehren Kruger, who previously collaborated on the massive hit “Top Gun: Maverick.” The studio is aiming to emulate the phenomenal success of Cruise’s return to the “Top Gun” franchise, which became a global box-office sensation.
Directed by Tony Scott, the original “Days of Thunder” followed a talented NASCAR driver struggling to reclaim his place in professional racing following a near-fatal accident.
