Rockstar Confirms GTA 6 Will Avoid Trump and COVID Satire
Rockstar Games has long built its reputation on delivering razor-sharp, unapologetic parodies of American excess. With more than a decade separating Grand Theft Auto V and the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, the studio has an immense reservoir of modern culture to lampoon. However, recent previews indicate that certain monumental real-world developments will remain entirely off-limits—most notably, the political rise of Donald Trump and the global COVID-19 pandemic.
For a player base that relies on the franchise as an exaggerated, funhouse-mirror escape from reality, this omission comes as a welcome choice. Yet for Rockstar, the decision is rooted in artistic longevity rather than controversy avoidance.
“We run the risk of dating ourselves in a sort of awkward way,” explained Rob Nelson, head of studio at Rockstar North, in an interview with The New York Times. “So we have to look at things and go, What is going to have a timeless sort of quality that will speak very easily to relatable sort of human folly and foibles and will be remembered as part of this time?”
While the game will bypass direct historical reenactments, it will reportedly explore adjacent social dynamics, such as the mainstream surge of internet subcultures, misinformation, and collective paranoia.
Expanding on this philosophy during a conversation with IGN, Nelson elaborated on the creative challenges imposed by prolonged production timelines:
“Because we work on such a long development cycle, we have to not jump on stuff and instead choose our angle of approach carefully and decide what things are going to be a bit more timeless. We’re not a TV show coming out every week or every month. We have to be careful that what we’re choosing to satirize is not going to feel dated in a weird way. I think those broader things are OK to satirize, but very specific political issues or memes will date fast.”
While early promotional trailers did feature nods to viral internet moments—including caricatures reminiscent of the notorious “Florida Joker” and frenetic social video feeds—the narrative foundation deliberately avoids ephemeral slang and hyper-specific headlines.
By focusing on enduring human absurdities rather than transient news cycles, Rockstar aims to deliver an open world that remains culturally resonant for years to come. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
