Roblox to require facial age checks for chat, similar to Discord, months after CEO told parents to ‘not let your kids be on Roblox’

Those checks will be required for any player who wants to use communication features like chat, and they form part of a broader safety update. Developers are also rolling out age-segmented chat to reduce interactions between adults and users under 18. The changes will be phased in, starting with an optional “Facial Age Estimation” process made available immediately.

Kaufman and Bhatia describe the move as a pioneering step for gaming platforms and say the company hopes it will set a new standard. For users worried about privacy, Roblox says images and video used for verification are deleted immediately after processing.

According to the announcement, the initiative aims to deliver more age-appropriate experiences across the site, which should improve interactions for users of all ages. That’s an important promise given the long-running debates over minors on Roblox — the issue even drew coverage from the BBC in March.

When concerns flared previously, CEO Dave Baszucki advised parents to simply “not let your kids be on Roblox” — a response he acknowledged might “sound a little counter-intuitive.” Now, the company appears to have a concrete plan; here’s hoping it delivers real improvements.
