Seamus trades beside the large barn at Emerald Ranch.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has four standard Fence vendors in Story Mode. They buy stolen valuables, sell unusual weapons and recipe pamphlets, and craft trinkets and talismans. Three are available once Chapter 2 free roam begins. The Emerald Ranch Fence opens through a story mission and also handles stolen wagons.

Quick answer

  • Emerald Ranch: at the large red barn on the southwest side of the ranch. Complete The Spines of America to open Seamus’s Fence and wagon service.
  • Rhodes: in the red shack at the caravan camp just north of town. This standard Fence is available from the start of Chapter 2.
  • Saint Denis: inside the market on the east side of the city, near the Trapper. This standard Fence is available from the start of Chapter 2.
  • Van Horn Trading Post: in a building at the end of the eastern pier. This standard Fence is available from the start of Chapter 2.

When Fences become available

Rhodes, Saint Denis, and Van Horn are the fastest options if you want to sell valuables early in Chapter 2. Emerald Ranch works differently. Seamus begins trading as a standard Fence and wagon buyer after The Spines of America, the Chapter 2 mission with Hosea.

This guide counts the four standard Fence shops that buy valuables and sell the Lock Breaker. The Horse Fence at Clemens Cove, northwest of Rhodes, is a separate specialist. It opens after Horse Flesh for Dinner in Chapter 3 and buys stolen horses rather than serving as a normal shop.

All four Red Dead Redemption 2 Fence locations

Emerald Ranch Fence and wagon buyer

Ride to Emerald Ranch, east of Valentine, and go to the southwest side of the large red barn. Seamus trades from the small extension on the barn’s right side. Complete The Spines of America to unlock his normal Fence counter and the barn doors used for wagon deliveries. This is the only one of the four standard Fences that also buys stolen wagons and stagecoaches.

Van Horn Trading Post Fence

The Van Horn Fence is in the dockside building at the end of the pier.

Van Horn Trading Post sits on the far eastern edge of New Hanover. Follow the waterfront to the end of the eastern pier and enter the worn dockside building. The shop is also east of the post office. It is a standard Fence, so you can sell stolen valuables, buy the Lock Breaker, and use the usual Fence inventory once Chapter 2 free roam is available.

Rhodes Fence

The Rhodes Fence works from a red shack north of town.

Leave Rhodes by the road heading north and look for the caravan camp just outside town. The Fence serves customers from the back of a rusty red shack. You do not need to reach Chapter 3 to use this shop. It is available from the start of Chapter 2 and is usually the simplest early destination for buying a Lock Breaker.

Saint Denis Fence

The Saint Denis Fence is inside the market near the Trapper.

Go to the market district on the east side of Saint Denis. The Fence is under the market’s brick arches, close to the Trapper, in a permanent shop rather than a roadside shack. It is available from the start of Chapter 2. Use the map’s shop index after discovering the marker if the surrounding stalls make the entrance hard to spot.

How to get the Lock Breaker

You can buy the Lock Breaker from any of the four standard Fences. Its listed price is $25. Seamus may show $22.50 after his 10 percent shop discount is active. If you would rather wait, Josiah Trelawny provides the tool during Friends in Very Low Places in Chapter 3 when Arthur needs to open a stagecoach lockbox quietly.

For the earliest purchase, ride to the Rhodes Fence after Chapter 2 begins. Van Horn and Saint Denis work just as well. Emerald Ranch becomes a convenient choice after The Spines of America because the same stop covers valuables, Lock Breaker purchases, and stolen wagon sales.

What the Lock Breaker opens

The Lock Breaker is a permanent piece of equipment. It opens certain locked chests, lockboxes, and doors without a gunshot. Approach a compatible lock and use the on-screen break prompt. It is especially useful on the strongboxes mounted on stagecoaches when you want to keep the robbery quiet.

Safes are the main exception. The Lock Breaker does not open them, so use dynamite where the game permits it. Many ordinary containers need no special tool, which is why the prompt appears only at compatible locks.
