“Save Mass Effect” Graffiti at EA Office Sparks Vandalism Debate
Not all fans approve of such forms of protest.
Following the closure of BioWare and the cancellation of the new Mass Effect game development, some franchise fans launched a campaign to save the game. While some limit themselves to slogans on social media, physical protests occasionally occur.
Fans previously organized a fundraiser and paid to install several #SaveMassEffect billboards, and now photos shared by Reddit user Ok_Link9625 have gone viral within the gaming community. According to the user, they were walking past the Electronic Arts office in Madrid after leaving a movie theater when they spotted graffiti at the entrance and on the wall calling to save Mass Effect.
This form of protest has sparked debate within the community. Some Mass Effect fans view this as an act of vandalism and believe it harms the #SaveMassEffect movement:
Whoever orchestrated this didn’t even think about how it could backfire on us publicly. I’m all for saving ME, of course, but we shouldn’t resort to such measures — Xan1995
This month, Mass Effect fans plan to hold a gaming marathon on PC and consoles. They want to boost online player metrics in the games to demonstrate to Electronic Arts that interest in the franchise remains strong.
