PS6 will be weaker than Xbox’s Project Helix, but does it matter? Digital Foundry Analysis

The first technical leaks regarding the PlayStation 6 and Xbox “Project Helix” have surfaced. Digital Foundry experts have scrutinized the data, concluding that Microsoft’s potential raw power advantage may not necessarily dictate market dominance.

According to reports from industry insiders Moore’s Law is Dead and Kepler_L2, both next-gen systems are being developed in partnership with AMD. The hardware is expected to feature Zen 6 CPU architectures and RDNA 5 graphics. Rumors suggest the next Xbox will utilize a 192-bit memory bus, whereas the PS6 may stick to a 160-bit interface, potentially granting Microsoft’s system superior memory bandwidth.

Processor configurations also appear to diverge. Project Helix is rumored to house three high-performance Zen 6 cores paired with eight energy-efficient Zen 6c cores. In contrast, the PS6 is expected to lean heavily on Zen 6c cores complemented by specialized low-power processing blocks.

Graphical capabilities show a similar gap; the Xbox could boast up to 68 RDNA 5 Compute Units (CUs), while the PS6 is projected to feature around 54. However, hardware enthusiasts note that raw specs aren’t everything—the current PS5, with its 36 CUs, remains highly competitive against the Xbox Series X and its 52 CUs.

Microsoft is reportedly betting big on artificial intelligence, integrating a powerful NPU capable of roughly 110 TOPS. Sony, meanwhile, is said to be focusing on GPU-driven machine learning acceleration. Both platforms will utilize sophisticated image reconstruction techniques like PSSR and FSR, which Sony and AMD are co-developing under the “Project Amethyst” banner.

Digital Foundry points out that even if the Xbox holds a 20% performance lead, the visible difference in games may be negligible. In the current era of dynamic resolution and AI-powered upscaling, extra hardware overhead often only translates into a slightly higher internal rendering resolution that is difficult to spot during gameplay.

Analysts also suggest that Sony and Microsoft are pursuing distinct market strategies. The PS6 is likely to remain a traditional gaming console, focusing on consumer price points and exclusive experiences. Project Helix, by contrast, may evolve into a “console-PC” hybrid designed to bridge the gap between the Xbox and Windows ecosystems.

If these leaks hold true, the next generation of hardware will represent a significant departure from the conventional rivalry we’ve seen in decades past.
