Prime Video’s Fallout Shelter Reality Series Sets 2027 Release Date
Prime Video’s Fallout has been a big hit for Amazon. The first season drew more than 100 million views. The TV show also did well with critics and earned 17 Emmy nominations. Those included Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Walton Goggins, who plays The Ghoul. Season 2 generally received positive reviews, and fans are looking ahead to the third season of Fallout, which is currently in production.
Amazon MGM now wants to build on that success with a spinoff. It is a game show that, to my eye, seems to misunderstand the material it draws from. On Friday, Amazon released the first teaser for Fallout Shelter: The Experiment, a reality competition series coming to Prime Video early next year.
The teaser trailer offers few details. It does confirm that Bethesda Game Studios, Kilter Films and Studio Lambert (The Traitors, Squid Game: The Challenge) are all involved in the Fallout project. A Pip-Boy display in the teaser reads, “The world is ending. The competition is just beginning.” The biggest news is the release date of Jan. 13, 2027. The show was previously announced to run for 10 episodes.
What else do we know about the series?
Here is Amazon’s official description of Fallout Shelter: The Experiment:
Set inside Vault-Tec’s bomb-proof vaults, Fallout Shelter drops a diverse group of contestants into an immersive, high-stakes world inspired by the games’ signature dark humor, retro-futurism, and post-apocalyptic survival storytelling. Across a series of escalating challenges, strategic dilemmas, and moral crossroads, contestants must prove their ingenuity, teamwork, and resilience as they compete for safety, power, and ultimately a huge cash prize.
The reality show takes its inspiration from the 2015 construction and management sim Fallout Shelter. That suggests the competitions will center on vault dwellers trying to survive a post-apocalyptic nightmare world. Expect some blue jumpsuits.

A casting call for the show adds more detail:
The dwellers (contestants) live together in a top-secret vault, where they will compete in a series of games that tests the seven core attributes from the Fallout world. Strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck (S.P.E.C.I.A.L). The series will not only test dwellers’ core attributes, but also their loyalty and alliances. It’s a game of power dynamics, popularity and social strategy which will ultimately result in a huge cash prize, but do you have what it takes to be the most S.P.E.C.I.A.L?
Nothing concrete from Fallout Shelter: The Experiment has appeared yet, but the premise recalls Squid Game: The Challenge. That reality show took Squid Game, a cautionary tale against capitalist dehumanization, and turned it into a form of capitalist dehumanization. Fallout is a dark comedy satire about a world where nationalism and corporate exploitation ended civilization. A game show built on it makes for an ironic fit.
When is the other Fallout TV show coming back?
Viewers who don’t care for reality television have good news. Amazon has already announced more of the scripted Fallout TV series. The show was renewed for a third season in 2025, shortly before season 2 aired from December 2025 to January 2026. Filming for season 3 began in July 2026, so the series will likely return sometime in 2027.
