Lawrence Makoare, Who Played Lurtz in The Lord of the Rings, Says He Is Joining The Hunt for Gollum
The team behind The Hunt for Gollum is still bringing back veterans of Peter Jackson’s trilogy.
Lawrence Makoare, who played several of the heroes’ enemies in The Lord of the Rings, has joined the cast of The Hunt for Gollum. He shared the news while explaining why he cannot attend the Armageddon Expo festival in Auckland:
“Unfortunately, I’ll be finishing work on ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ in Wellington this weekend.”
Which character Makoare will play this time is not yet known. In The Fellowship of the Ring, he played Lurtz, the Uruk-hai leader who mortally wounds Boromir. In The Return of the King, he appeared in two roles: the Witch-king and the orc commander Gothmog.

Andy Serkis directs The Hunt for Gollum and will also return to the title role. The film is set before the main events of The Fellowship of the Ring. It follows Aragorn’s search for Gollum as he tries to keep information about the Ring from reaching Sauron.
Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood will also return as Gandalf and Frodo. The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.
