Mamoru Oshii’s new work will open in Japanese theaters in November.

The team behind the anime Armored Trooper Votoms: The Gray Witch has released two new trailers and a poster. The main trailer focuses on the harsh daily life of war and the battles of armored walking machines. The second includes a snippet of the main theme, “Na mo naki Shijin no you ni,” performed by Mika Nakashima.

The story takes place near the end of the Hundred Years’ War between Gilgamesh and Balarant. Officer Maki Stauffenberg arrives at a frontline base to learn the details of the past of Ash Vamps, a member of a penal unit. Her fellow soldiers call her the Witch because she keeps returning alive, even from the most hopeless missions. Searching for answers, Maki joins Ash’s squad and goes with it deep into enemy territory.

Sunrise is producing the project with support from Production I.G. Director Mamoru Oshii brought in longtime colleagues, including Kazuchika Kise, who handled animation on Ghost in the Shell and Innocence. Kise created the original character designs, which Tetsuya Nishio (The Sky Crawlers, Naruto), Takashi Kojima, and Shingo Ogiso then refined. Kenji Kawai composed the music. He has worked with Oshii since The Red Spectacles and the first feature film Patlabor: The Movie.

Armored Trooper Votoms: The Gray Witch will be released as two feature-length films. The first part opens in Japanese theaters on November 20, 2026, and the release date for the second has not been announced yet.
