Prime Video Launches New Rom Com Promoted As Star Wars Replacement

Comment Views: 0

Romance is present in Star Wars, but it rarely acts as the main focus of George Lucas’ creation. Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) share a love story for the ages, yet most franchise fans explore romance between characters through their own creative work. Fanfiction leads the charge for many a Star Wars relationship, and one couple in particular has inspired an incredibly vocal fanbase.

The sequel trilogy for Star Wars centers on Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley), while Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) serves as the Darth Vader figure haunting the narrative. Kylo, the son of Han and Leia, adopts the name Kylo Ren and leads the First Order in honor of his grandfather. Although the two share only a single kiss as the redeemed Ben Solo takes his last breath, the power of Reylo persists. Fans remain captivated by the pairing, which inspired novels like Ali Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis. That book is now a hit Prime Video film starring Tom Bateman, who is Ridley’s real-life husband.

Bateman plays Adam Carlsen, a professor at Stanford who enters a fake relationship with Olive Smith (Lili Reinhart). The Star Wars fanfic turned romantic comedy captivates audiences upon release, claiming the number one spot on the streaming platform. Viewers discuss comparisons between the novel, the film, and the underlying Star Wars franchise. Some fans even wonder if Tom Benton (Arty Froushan) receives his name from Bateman himself due to the connection to Ridley. Ultimately, the adaptation functions as a substitute for a new Star Wars movie.

Why Not Bring Star Wars to the Science Lab?

The Love Hypothesis press still

Alternate universe stories are common in fanfiction, and many tropes and storylines engage fans deeply. Published works originating from fanfiction have a documented history of reaching live-action screens. Rachel Reid’s Game Changers inspired the Heated Rivalry adaptation after Reid reportedly posted an early version on Archive of Our Own as Stucky fanfiction featuring Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers. Similarly, the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise started as Twilight fanfiction. The Love Hypothesis serves as a rite of passage for the Star Wars franchise.

The appeal of this alternate universe story rests on how different the plot of The Love Hypothesis is from the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Certain characters mirror figures from Rey’s journey, such as Olive’s roommate Malcolm (Jaboukie Young-White) functioning as a version of Finn (John Boyega). For the most part, however, director Claire Scanlon and writer Sarah Rothschild leave the sci-fi elements behind to center the narrative on the central romance.

This framing allows Olive and Adam to evoke Kylo and Rey. Whether intended by design or not, the result is a romantic comedy that resembles watching two Star Wars characters fall in love without laser blasts. Bateman and Reinhart evoke 1990s romantic comedy tones, offering viewers nostalgic for classic cinema a fresh alternative to repeatedly watching When Harry Met Sally.

The parallels between Olive and Adam and Ridley and Driver remain subtle rather than overt. Informed viewers recognize what The Love Hypothesis accomplishes. The project demonstrates how Star Wars inspires alternative storytelling across different genres. The Love Hypothesis ultimately provides a cozy viewing experience for audiences seeking romance.
