Pre-release Trailer Released for Ribbon Hero

Osamu Tezuka’s modern reimagining of Princess Knight is coming to Netflix on August 8.

Twin Engine has released a pre-release trailer for the anime film Ribbon Knight one day before its premiere. The video focuses on the confrontation between Princess Sapphire and Velvet against the backdrop of the return of a catastrophe that previously destroyed the princess’s kingdom.

Ribbon Knight reimagines Osamu Tezuka’s manga Princess Knight for a modern audience. The original work told the story of Sapphire, who was forced to hide her gender and pose as a prince in order to inherit the throne. The new version retains the image of the girl with a sword and a red ribbon, but places the heroine into an independent story:

“Sapphire is a princess of a kingdom that no longer exists. Having lost everything in her homeland of Silverland due to a disaster named Nergal, she wanders in despair and eventually ends up in Goldland. Although the past continues to weigh heavily on her, the kindness of the locals gives the girl hope. But Nergal appears once again. The despair that once reduced her homeland to ashes now threatens to deprive this land of light as well. ‘I will not lose anything else and I will not let anyone lose anything.’ Wiping away her tears, the girl takes up her sword.”

Comedian Saaya voices the main heroine, and Koki Uchiyama, known for his roles as Shigaraki in My Hero Academia and Meruem in Hunter × Hunter, gives voice to Velvet. The cast also includes Seiran Kobayashi, Mayumi Shintani, Yoshimasa Hosoya, and Nijisanji members Mito Tsukino, Runrun, and Debidebi Debiru.

Yuki Igarashi, who worked on Jujutsu Kaisen and the anthology Star Wars: Visions, serves as the director. Twin Engine is producing the project, and studio Outline is handling the animation. The film will be the franchise’s first animated project since the 1999 short film.

Ribbon Knight premieres on August 8, 2026, exclusively on Netflix.
