The PlayStation 5 remains one of the most sought-after consoles on the market and continues to gain sales momentum. Recent figures show that its lifetime sales have now surpassed those of its renowned predecessor.
Several months ago, Sony announced that PS5 sales had topped 80 million units. That figure has since been eclipsed — the company has set a new milestone.
Industry analyst Mat Piscatella reported that, according to a recent study from research firm Circana (which also releases monthly game-sales rankings), the PlayStation 5 officially overtook the PlayStation 3 in September. Total lifetime sales have reached 87.4 million units — the amount needed to surpass Sony’s sixth-generation console.
With this achievement, the PS5 is firmly established among Sony’s most successful systems and is now closing in on the next target: matching the PlayStation 4, which sold more than 117 million units.
