Earlier this year I broke the news that Take-Two was close to rescuing Xbox’s Perfect Dark but the deal fell apart.
Now, a new development: Take-Two has hired Perfect Dark studio head Darrell Gallagher and director Brian Horton to start a brand new studio within 2K.— @jasonschreier.bsky.social (@jasonschreier.bsky.social.bsky.social) 2025-12-09T14:25:19.831Z
“We don’t have additional details to share at this time, but we look forward to sharing updates on their work in the future,” the company added.
Both creators previously worked at The Initiative, Xbox Game Studios’ internal team that had been developing the intended new Perfect Dark. After the project was revealed in 2020, Microsoft-wide cuts led to The Initiative being disbanded and the game shelved. Attempts were reportedly made to find a new home for that version of the sci-fi shooter, but those talks did not succeed, leaving Joanna Dark’s fate uncertain.
Given the developers’ backgrounds, it’s reasonable to suspect their new studio may pursue another shooter project — though that remains speculation until Take-Two or 2K provides more information. We’ll have to wait for official details.
Perfect Dark: Joanna Dark actor urges a Hi-Fi Rush-style revival after Microsoft cancels the reboot, while a Starfield and Deus Ex actor says losing his scrapped role will cost him “thousands of dollars.”
