Industry veteran Patrick Söderlund and his team at Embark have a team-based shooter in the works. The former DICE CEO and Chief Design Officer at EA left the publisher in 2018 to form Embark with Nexon as its publisher.
Söderlund’s post on Embark’s blog explains that the recent job openings for the studio are for a PvP team-based shooter in development. In addition to sharing a piece of character concept art (above) Söderlund, who says he thought he was “done” with making competitive shooters, says the pitch for this project was “too irresistible to ignore”. He adds that the game heavily emphasizes teamwork and “puts dynamism, physicality, and destruction front and center”. It’ll likely be a while before we see much of substance from this project given that Embark is currently staffing up for it, but it’s cool to get a glimpse of what’s going on over there.
This new shooter would be Embark’s second game currently in the works. The studio announced its first title in February 2019, which we still know next to nothing about. According to the post, the first project apparently entered production this past spring. The rest of the blog post provides an update on Embark’s game creation platform and is worth a read for an idea of the various irons the studio has in the fire.
Söderlund served as CEO of Battlefield developer DICE when EA acquired the studio in 2006. He climbed EA’s corporate ladder before becoming Chief Design Officer in April 2018. Söderlund then departed the company later that August. He’s perhaps best remembered for pushing the adoption of DICE’s Frostbite engine for all EA titles including Mass Effect, Need for Speed, and the EA Sports games.
