Over 85 Percent of Japanese Game Developers Use Generative AI
According to a new report from CESA, 85.8% of Japanese game developers use generative AI in their work. Out of those respondents, 63% apply it daily and 22.8% use it from time to time.
The Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), which organizes the Tokyo Game Show, presented preliminary data from its report on the state of the Japanese gaming industry. A survey of developers and companies revealed a sharp increase in the use of generative AI, up from 51% the previous year.
Developers view increased efficiency and productivity, shorter development timelines, and lower costs as the main benefits of the technology. The most widespread control measure is mandatory human involvement, which includes reviewing, correcting, and monitoring AI outputs. Companies also limit the set of tools they use and try to avoid utilizing generated content directly.

In the 2025 report, AI was most frequently used to create images and visual materials, followed by writing stories and text, and supporting programming. Additionally, 32% of companies used AI when developing their own game engines.
