GTA: San Andreas Actor Behind CJ Denies Rumors He Is Unhappy With His Pay for the Role
Young Maylay, who played Carl “CJ” Johnson in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, has denied longstanding rumors that he was unhappy with his pay for the role.
The game was a major success, and some sources have claimed that the actor was dissatisfied with his fee. In an episode of “The Final Mission” highlighted by a user named rpg!, Young Maylay discussed the rumors with Ned Luke, who played Michael De Santa in Grand Theft Auto V.
Young Maylay said people have no idea how much he was paid. He said he received a fee and unexpected “bonuses” sent after the game was released:
I’ll be honest with you: they could have made anyone famous by giving them that role. Who am I to say, like, “Oh, that’s not enough money”? What they paid me was enough for me, and then they gave me even more.

Young Maylay called the rumors that he was unhappy with his pay nonsense:
To put all these rumors that I was supposedly unhappy with my pay to rest once and for all… That’s complete nonsense. If I had been unhappy with the pay, I simply wouldn’t have taken the project.
Rockstar Games is preparing to release Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The actors playing the lead characters, Lucia and Jason, have not been revealed, and players have proposed various theories about who is involved.
