Developers have explained how they preserved the features of the series and adapted the gameplay for mobile devices.

The free-to-play Monster Hunter Outlanders, created by TiMi Studio Group under a license from Capcom, recently released on iOS and Android. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, development lead Brian Lee discussed how the team brought the familiar gameplay of the series to smartphones and collaborated with the creators of the franchise:

“Fortunately, most of our team members are long-time, dedicated fans of the franchise who know it inside and out. Monster Hunter Outlanders retains much of what makes the series recognizable: familiar monsters, weapons, and the feel of controls and hits. But simply replicating a similar experience would not be enough, so the team put a lot of effort into tuning the controls. This is how two solutions came to be: a classic mode for those already familiar with mobile action games, and a simplified adventure mode for players with less experience in the franchise.”

While working on Outlanders, the team also relied on Capcom’s expertise while sharing its own approaches to developing free-to-play games in return:

“Capcom knows this franchise inside and out, and we were fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from them on how to define core combat mechanics and create believable creatures for the Monster Hunter universe. Tencent has relatively more experience working on free-to-play games designed for long-term support. Therefore, we share not only launch plans with our colleagues, but also our approach to the further development of the project.”

Particular attention was paid to the duration of play sessions. According to Lee, the developers repeatedly revised their decisions and tested them:

“Shortening play sessions is a natural decision. The challenge is finding the right balance. We reworked this aspect many times. We know how to put forward different hypotheses, but we do not always hit the mark on the first try. That is why we constantly run multiple rounds of playtests and public tests, inviting players to evaluate our assumptions alongside us.”

Monster Hunter Outlanders was released on October 29. Players are invited to explore the new Esoland region and hunt monsters independently or in a squad of up to four players.
