James Gunn Willing to Do Whatever It Takes to Bring Margot Robbie Back as Harley Quinn
James Gunn is ready to find a place for Margot Robbie in the new DC cinematic universe if she wants to return.
James Gunn would love to see Margot Robbie return as Harley Quinn. Speaking on The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? podcast, the head of DC Studios shared that the character will appear in the new DC cinematic universe sooner or later, but whether the actress herself will return to the role remains unknown:
“She is incredible. I adore her as Harley. I don’t know if she’ll want to play Harley again. Maybe she’s left that role behind. But if Margot wants to play her in the DCU, I will bend over backward to organically fit her into the world.”
Margot Robbie first played Harley Quinn in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and then returned to the role in Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad, which was directed by Gunn himself. Around the release of the latter film, the actress admitted that she needed a break from the character after two back-to-back pictures:
“We shot Birds of Prey and this movie practically back-to-back, and I thought, ‘Oof, I need a break from Harley because she is exhausting.’ I don’t know when we’ll see her again. I’m just as curious as everyone else.”

So far, no projects featuring Harley Quinn have been announced in the new DC cinematic universe, and Robbie herself has not reported any plans to return to the role.
